After a trip to Ghana, sisters Genevive and Josephine Sosuh came up with the idea for their business, Made N Ghana Designs. Genevive Sosuh described how their heritage influences their work and what attracted them to Roots N Blues.

What is this business?

“We are a, kind of like a fashion/merchandise business. We sell clothing, locally sourced in Ghana and made in Ghana, and then we ship them down here to sell.”

What started this idea?

“The idea? It was about three years ago; my sister and I, we actually took a trip to Ghana, and we went there. We made a bunch of clothing, and on our way back my sister actually wore one of the pieces she made, and she kept getting compliments on it. People were asking her, like even on the airplane, where her clothing was from. And we got a lot of great responses when we actually moved here and started wearing our clothing, so we decided why not bring a little piece of home back here and sell to people?”

How does your heritage influence what you do?

“Honestly it’s all about it. The colors, the patterns, the texture, all that kind of stuff is really huge in our culture, so that’s just a way of us expressing ourselves. So I feel that’s also another way you can naturally tell by the atmosphere all that kind of texture and fabric and all that kind of stuff.”

What is your favorite part of being at Roots N Blues?

“Honestly the environment. It’s really nice. People are super friendly. This is our first time actually being vendors here, so it’s just taking everything in and just experiencing it with our people and also gauging what it is that they’re attracted to, like when they first see our tent.”

What is your most popular item?

“The fans.”

Why do you think that is?

“Well, it’s very hot outside, so that is definitely one [factor]. It’s a really good thing then because we can sell the fans, and I feel like the colors, and the texture and the fabric of it is drawing a lot of people in.”[vc_masonry_media_grid grid_id=”vc_gid:1569805524202-85dcd23e-2f2f-4″ include=”317591,317589,317585,317584,317583,317582,317581,317580,317579,317576,317577,317578,317500″][penci_text_block block_title_align=”style-title-left”]How does your heritage affect what you do?
