RBHS freshman baseball team defeated Capital City 9-0 Mon. April 20
The game started out with the Capital City Cavaliers batting as freshman Steven Squires pitched the game. The Cavaliers failed to get any runs, but the Bruins scored 2 runs in the second half of the first inning, thanks to a run batted in (RBI) by freshman Dane Bremer.
The second inning brought in one more run for the Bruins after Bremer stole second and third base. The third inning had zero runs from either team, concluding the early innings with a score of 3-0, with the Bruins in the lead. Coach Tanner Hakert shares what he believes the team did best on in this night’s game.
“I thought [we had] good pitching; we threw a lot of strikes,” Hakert said. “[We] played a pretty clean defense, but overall, when pitchers throw strikes, the game gets a whole lot easier and smoother to play.”
The top of the fourth inning of the game started off with a base hit and steal from the Cavaliers before they got three outs. With runners on first and second for the Bruins, freshman Micah Pyle drove in two runs for the team, making the score 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth. The fifth inning began with the Cavaliers hitting a single, followed by another hit to get a player on third, before wrapping up the top of the fifth. The bottom of the fifth led to the Bruins having the bases loaded before freshman Madden Kurowski stepped up to the plate. Kurowski was able to secure the grand slam and wrap up the fifth inning with a score of 9-0.
“The pitcher threw me a two-seam fastball, and I just sat on the back floor, and poked one out there,” Kurowski said. “It’s always good to go out there and have them put up a zero spot on the scoreboard.”
In the sixth inning, the Cavaliers were able to secure a base hit before three players struck out at bat. The Bruins started off the bottom of the sixth with an out and a hit down the center which got thrown to first, adding another out and the third out followed shortly after. The game ended after the top of the seventh inning, after the Bruins easily got three outs on the Cavaliers. Hakert explains some adjustments made during the game.
“During the game, they had a left-handed pitcher, which is less common,” Hakert said. “So batters had to make an adjustment to one, seeing it from a different side, but, two, [the pitcher] had kind of a slower below, so that means we got to work on waiting for the ball to travel to us, and then trying to line drive up the middle of the other way. l thought our batters did a good job adjusting to that.”
