Last Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Bruins won by a staggering 53-24 against Hickman Kewpies in a home game.
The Bruins secured an immediate lead in the first quarter when junior Nick Timbrook scored two points at the very beginning of the game. Their streak continued after senior Will Priest scored a swift three-point field goal, followed by six more points being scored by the Bruins before a timeout was called.
Post timeout, the Bruins were able to gain another five points via senior Donovan Parris and Priest, with the latter hitting another three-point field goal in the last 15 seconds of the game. The first quarter ended with the Bruins in a strong lead of 16-4. Priest states that he felt at ease going into the start of the game
“I did not have any major worries heading into the Hickman game because at the end of the day,” Priest said. “It is just a game and our team just likes to go out there and compete with each other.”
In the second quarter, the Kewpies managed to score four points, before Priest scored another field goal and achieved three more points for the Bruins. Their strong defense allowed for the Kewpies to only score two more points. Subsequently, the Bruins managed to score another four points before calling a timeout in the last ten seconds.
After the timeout, sophomore Jordan Davis scored another three points in a last-second shot, allowing the Bruins to keep their lead with an impressive 27-10. Freshman Beckett Bruns shares how he and his team get prepared when going into a game.
“We really got locked in, in the locker room we play music, hype each other up and then go over the game plan but warmups are when we really get hype, especially in dunk lines,” Bruns said.
When the third quarter began, both teams found themselves in a stalemate of being unable to score and accruing fouls. However, junior Bookee Kritza managed to break that stalemate by scoring another three points for the Bruins.
Despite the Kewpies showing some strong offense, the Bruins kept scoring, going into a timeout with 34-16. Following the timeout, the Bruins managed to score another five points via senior Eli Jones, Kritza, and junior Graham McKim, ending the third quarter with 39-17, maintaining their strong lead. Bruns explains exactly what he thinks made the Bruins’ plays so strong.
“I would say our defense really helped us,” Bruns said. “We made them scramble on offense, making them turn it over, [which turned] into easy points.”
In the final quarter, Bruns managed to score two more points after a strong pass from Jones. The Bruins maintained their strong offense, despite the Kewpies managing to make shots on them. After a timeout where the two teams stood 49-24, the Bruins’ victory became apparent. Priest shares what he personally thinks helped them excel during the game.
“I think the environment helped us excel the most during the game,” Priest said. “It was an incredible crowd, and we are very grateful for the energy they brought from the jump.”
After the Bruins gained another point, sophomore Matt Sullivan scored a point goal, attaining another three points for the team and securing the Bruins’ victory over the Kewpies with a substantial 53-24. Priest reflects on the season so far and his optimism going forward.
“We have enjoyed this season so far, [and] have grown a lot together on and off the court,” Priest said. “We hope to win a few more games and see how far we can go in the post-season. It’s a good group of guys, so I like our chances.”
