Famous Pop Star Chappell Roan was an unknown artist until recently, not releasing much music until 2023. Her hit album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” was well received when she performed it at music concerts or as an opener for Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” tour.
Because of Rodrigo’s large platform, Roan practically blew up overnight, with her songs “Hot To Go!” and “Good Luck Babe!” seemingly inescapable on social media. Naturally with fame comes “superfans;’ these fans often dig so deep into a creator’s life that they can find anything, like addresses, family members and other personal information. Roan recently vocalized that she is uncomfortable and unwilling to accept stalker-like behavior from fans, which has become controversial on many media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
Fundamentally, being famous does not inherently warrant creepy behavior, so stop making undesirable situations for celebrities. Unfortunately, not everyone acknowledges this, seeing as it was shared by Roan during a Rolling Stone interview that while celebrating a friend’s birthday at a bar, she felt a person grab her by the arm and kiss her forcefully.
Under any other circumstances, these types of interactions would be deemed sexual harassment or assault, but because Roan is a relatively large celebrity, many believe she should put up with unjust treatment. Although Roan is grateful for the support her music has gotten she still “feels the most unsafe” she has ever felt in her entire life, which she addressed in her critical Instagram post. Celebrities deserve respect, just as any person would normally. Fans of art need to stop treating celebrities like their friends.
It’s important to know when to establish boundaries with others, especially when safety is being called into question, hence why Roan recently came under fire on social media for posting a video to her TikTok expressing that she does not want creepy behavior towards herself or her family, including stalking, hugging and showing up to her parents home. It was even more jarring when fans began to berate her for not wishing to sign autographs or attend to her fans wishes when she had her own free time. While Roan is grateful for her fans who support her, she is not one to tolerate blatant disregard of boundaries.
You may feel that you know somebody through public information or art they release, but in reality, these artists do not know you. Going up to a random person and asking for a hug or photo or even following them around wouldn’t be a normal occurrence, so why should it be that way for celebrities? If you see a celebrity like Chappell Roan on the street, don’t expect to be owed anything; celebrities are people with their own lives, too. Chappell Roan is not indebted to her fans. She doesn’t owe them her time, her energy, or ‘creepy’ unwanted touches. Creepy behavior is creepy behavior, and fans of Roan and countless other celebrities need to realize this.
