Megyn Kelly,  the host of her live-audience, morning show “NBC Megyn Kelly Today,” has been under fire for the past week about comments she made on her show Tuesday, Oct. 23. On Tuesday’s show, Kelly made comments defending the use of blackface during Halloween in a roundtable discussion.
“But what is racist?” Kelly said. “Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character.”
Her comments set off a firestorm on social media and also drew rebuke from her colleagues on “Today.”
Kelly did not host her show as scheduled on Thursday morning and the network replaced her live telecast with a pre-taped episode. Friday episodes are normally pre-taped.
Oct. 26, NBC canceled the anchor’s show in a short statement reading, ” ‘Megyn Kelly Today’ is not returning. Next week, the 9 a.m. hour will be hosted by other Today co-anchors.”
Neither Kelly nor NBC have come out to say what Kelly’s future entails. Kelly, as of now, is still an employee of NBC, and is moving to a different department. Kelly is just one year into her three-year, $69 million contract.
[vc_text_separator title=”Do you think it was right for NBC to revoke Kelly’s show?”]”I mean I would say that she didn’t really say it to offend or attack anyone, and it was just saying that it was OK in the past. I don’t think that’s abuse right now, so she shouldn’t have been fired.” -Andrew Barnes, sophomore.”I think that she is legally allowed to say whatever she wants but it’s the companies decision to fire her; it’s their right to do that.” – Ellie Carver-Horner, sophomore”I think her comments were absolutely inappropriate. I think that there is room to forgive someone for those sorts of comments, but I think there should have at least been a suspension involved. I’m not sure a firing was necessarily unjust, but I’m not sure if I would’ve gone quite that far like NBC did.” – Kiren Macleod, senior”I think that NBC should have given [Megyn Kelly] a second chance. [Overall,] it depends on how drastic the statement is.” – Shruti Gautam, sophomore
