Writing can certainly change perspective. I’ve never considered myself a “fashion forward” person. I roll out of bed, throw on something clean and try to make it work. That’s my style.
But writing for the Style of the Week column has changed things. Suddenly, clothes are distracting. I’ll be loitering in the hallways between classes, catching up on the latest news, and someone will trot by with a new pair of boots. A scarf. A neon pair of pants. And then I’m off, pointing out one person or another, exclaiming “Ooh! That’d be a good Style of the Week,” or “Agh, get his attention! I need him for Style of the Week!”
I won’t lie. It’s become a miniature obsession.
So when I walked into show choir rehearsal the other morning and spotted junior Megan Kelly’s outfit, I fell in love. Many of the other girls were swarming around her, complimenting her pair of patterned skinny jeans. I managed to stay focused as I danced, but as soon as I got a chance, I swooped in. The lovely Megan Kelly became my Style of the Week.

“I feel like [fashion] is a double-edged sword,” Kelly said. ” … I like the feeling you get when you know you look good, because I’m not that confident of a person. It took me a long time to really figure out what I like [to wear] … But I feel like a lot of people tend to get obsessed with it, and spend so much money when it should just be a hobby. It should be, ‘I like fashion because I want to feel good,’ not because ‘I care what people think about me.’”
