With the 92nd Academy Awards set to air on Sunday, February 9th on ABC and nominations released, Oscar critiques and speculations are upon us.
The controversial drama “Joker” is leading the number of nominations with 11, and the Best Picture category nominees include “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,” and “Parasite.”
Once again there is concern for the lack of diversity in the nominations, particularly the absence of women in the best director category.
What are your opinions on this year’s Oscars nominations?
“I just think it's unfortunate that the Academy kind of looks at them (Adam Sandler-’Uncut Gems’ and Eddie Murphy-’Dolemite Is My Name’) just as comedic actors and it really seems like they didn't want to give them the chance to be nominated... so there was that. “I think that is really sad that she didn’t get recognized for her (Greta Gerwig) directing of “Little Women” especially because it was so clearly very well directed and it wouldn't have hurt them to just put her name in the mix even if she didn’t win. I think it’s really unfortunate because they hardly ever recognize female directors and it’s such a male dominated category that I wish they would make an effort to change it, because it’s not like women aren’t making movies that are good enough to be recognized, it’s just that they aren’t acknowledging them and they have a pretty clear bias.” -Ellie Carver-Horner, junior

I heard all of the nominations were very good movies, but the Joker was the only one I actually got around to seeing. I personally loved it!

Luke Stagg said he thinks Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will win Best Picture and I agree, it was really good, but my movie of the year was definitely JoJo Rabbit. I think the director for that (Taiki Waititi) could win Best Director too. Taiki Waititi is just a really good director and all of his movies are really well thought out,. As well as directing it, Waititi also played a comedic Hitler in JoJo Rabbit which was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.

I agree with Ty Butler because I also thought that all of the people deserved to be nominated. I suppose I do not know enough about the Oscars to really have a good opinion on who should be nominated.
