Ahlam Alamin (10) and Aneesh Calyam (9) run a check-in table during RBHS’s annual debate tournament, COMO Classic, on Feb. 2.

The RBHS Speech and Debate team, alongside the Hickman High School (HHS) and Battle High School (BHS) teams, will host a showcase Sat. May 11 to shed light on their performances and raise money for nationals.

The RBHS Speech and Debate promotion coordinator, sophomore Mira Tosh, participated in the organization of the silent auction where families and friends can bid on different items to help raise money. There will be food trucks before the performances, while the actual showcase will take place from 1-3 p.m..

Junior Jiya Shetty said there will be posters displayed at the showcase made by different members of the Speech and Debate team.

Each member makes a ‘What Speech and Debate Means to Me’ poster that will be hung up at the event and posted on our Instagram story. [This is] to demonstrate why we need support to continue this enriching experience for current and future members.”

Columbia Public Schools (CPS) Speech and Debate Coordinator Dr. Danielle Johnson said there will be a variety of different performances taking place at the showcase.

“We have people doing dramatic interpretation, radio, debates, informatory speaking and oratory speaking,” Dr. Johnson said, “[Those who attend the showcase] get to watch the people perform these pieces that are going to nationals.”

Tosh said the parts of the showcase she enjoys the most are getting the chance to witness her peers’ labor and the support of the Columbia community

“My favorite part about the showcase is seeing my teammates’ performances that I have not yet had the chance to watch,” Tosh said, “I also like the silent auction because you get to see how amazing Columbia is, [as] so many local businesses are willing to support CPS Speech and Debate.”
