NFL linebacker, Edwin Jackson of the Indianapolis Colts, was killed in a tragic car accident. He was killed along with his Uber driver, Jeffrey Monroe, on February 4th.
The accident was caused by a drunk driver, Manuel Orrego-Savala. This man also happens to be an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, who has been deported twice.
Four felony charges have been filed against him by Marion County Prosecutor, Terry Curry. This was not the first time Orrego-Savala has been found driving under the influence.
He crossed the border illegally on July 1st, 2004. He was then charged of a DUI in 2005. Later, in 2006, he was arrested by ICE officers in San Francisco, for “being an alien present without permission or parole. In 2007, he was deported back to Guatemala.
In March of 2009, he was again, found in San Francisco, and deported back.
Though this is primarily a matter of drinking and driving, there are still patterns that are apparent. Illegal immigrants are causing problems in the safety of Americans.
How should we go about handling illegal immigrants and their paths to citizenship?
”We should only deport them if they’ve actually done something [wrong]. We should deport them with restrictions because they can easily get back in again if they’ve done it before,” freshman Chandler Goble said.
”I think that people should be able to come into this country as long as they’ve been checked, and gone through background checks, and are safe to come into this country, then I feel like they should be able to come in,” junior Adalanya Hufendiek said.
”In my opinion, I think that immigrants are great, and as long as they don’t have a serious criminal past, they should be able to come into this country,” senior Jessica Hodder said.

I think it is a severe misunderstanding that illegal immigrants are automatically criminals or could cause harm to the country in which they have taken up residence. Most people are simply looking for a place to live life and create a better, safer life for their family. It is not our place to judge the past of another person and we should treat everyone, no matter their status, with common human decency and respect. It is sad that this accident happened, but he actions of one person can not reflect that of an entire nation or culture.
