C Jam Blues fills the auditorium as the Jazz Band prepares for the Sweet Night of Jazz annual fundraiser tomorrow, Friday the 17th. The event will feature music, dancing and food.
Jazz Band Director Steve Mathews sees the event as a fun opportunity for his musicians and audience members alike.
“I just always look forward to this event every year,” Mathews said. “I like this event because our jazz students learn a lot of music and get the experience of performing for an extended amount of time for dancing and entertainment.”

Hahm is not alone in his love of sharing music with other bands and people attending the event. Sophomore Katy Miller, trumpet, second chair, feels the visiting school bands and musicians will add to the music and the environment.
“I’m probably most excited for the Mizzou Swing Society to be there supporting us and getting people on their feet,” Miller said. “Their energy really adds a lot to the atmosphere.”
Among the bands attending are Gentry and Jefferson Middle Schools, Mathews said. The middle school bands will perform and showcase what talent might come to RBHS in upcoming years, at what Mathews believes will be the largest Sweet Night of Jazz in years.
“[I] hope that lots of people come out,” Mathews said. “Last year there were over 300 in attendance and the band parents are expecting more this time.” [vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/8E34UN0S3uo”]
