During A and B lunches, starting next Friday, Oct. 26, individual voices will fill the commons giving speeches and singing songs. The new open microphone, hosted by Folio, the school’s literary magazine, will allow students to creatively express their opinions and talents.
All participants need do is sign up with a Folio staff member, stationed in front of the planetarium, explain what their performance will be and follow the guidelines relayed to them.
Folio supervisor Kathryn Fishman-Weaver said anything goes, so long as the performance is “school appropriate.”
“Folio’s been really thinking about ‘What is our creative niche?’” Weaver said. “And one area we thought we could explore was creating an open performance space where we can encourage more creative expression and give everyone an opportunity. … We’re hoping it will be a really supportive environment.”

Yep! So long as you’re not rude, profane, talking about politics or religion, or just screwing around, anything is open for 3 minutes. (And if there is no one after you I’m sure you could continue.to read)

What’s wrong with talking about politics and religion? And thanks for letting me know. I just have a piece about spirituality that I’d like to share, and I don’t see how that’s so wrong.

We don’t want it to become a soap box, if there’s a story about religion it’s fine, but if you go up and preach it’s not okay. If you’re iffy on it, come and we’ll check it over and see if it’s okay. We’re just reluctant to include those topics because people can get a little worked up and just spew political/spiritual beliefs for 3 minutes, and we don’t want that – we want art.
