Superintendent Brian Yearwood announced students will not be in session for three days starting Friday, Jan. 21 as a result of a surge in the latest COVID-19 variant, Omicron. Columbia Public Schools (CPS) Board of Education plans to formally approve these changes at their work session Jan. 20.

Is it possible to be in two places at once? Reasonable physics would completely disregard the idea, but teenagers often relish in the thought. Literally rather than rationally, however, one can stay so busy it feels like their in two places at one time, but only if their willing to suffer the consequences: surrendering their sanity, mental well-being and social state of mind. Often brushed aside, all of these debilitating harms are generally deemed a fear of missing out (FOMO), something I struggle with on the daily.

Students use habits to cope with pressure

The quiet tap of a foot on the carpet floor or the quick movements of students shifting in their seats reveals a few ways students release pent-up energy during first hour. The classroom is humming with noise, the shuffling feet on the carpet and flipping papers contribute to the hum of background noise. These motions are not completely aimless, as they pertain to the feeling of minor agitation, also known as nervousness.
