As the first installment in an ongoing series featuring students from multicultural backgrounds, junior Pacifique Ishimwe Mugisha shares his experience living in Rwanda. Mugisha and his brother, senior Mugabo Bienvenue, moved to the U.S. two years ago.

Although one of the key points students learn about Mugisha’s home country is the Rwandan genocide of 1994, he only briefly mentions this period in his nation’s history. Instead, Mugisha speaks about how romantic relationships and friendships work, the importance of shared meals and how his time at Lake Kivu offered him periods of reflection and introspection.

This video provides an in-depth look into various aspects of his life, his thoughts on America and how he intends to keep his culture close to him in the future.

How did Mugisha’s story change your understanding of Rwanda? Let us know in the comments below.
