Student council (StuCo) hosted Cards for Veterans on Friday Nov. 22 before school and during both lunch periods. This was the third day of the StuCo-hosted kindness week which consisted of five days of charity and good deeds. It gave students and staff the opportunity to create cards and write letters to veterans. The event took place at tables in the main commons, and organizers assisted those who participated. StuCo prepared for this event by creating a committee that communicated over text, gathered materials and advertised with flyers. Junior Adrienne Smith helped lead the StuCo committee that organized Cards for Veterans.
“We [planned] on getting loads of papers and some printed out designs for the students who do not feel creatively gifted,” Smith said. “We also already have markers from teachers that are willing to let us borrow for our event.”
Along with other kindness week days such as the Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday and Clean Up day on Thursday, Cards for Veterans focused on giving back to the community. Each day featured a group of StuCo members, including senior Cooper Deneke, who picked a cause that interested them.
The Thanksgiving assembly Nov. 15 dedicated a large portion of time to honoring veterans. Young Republicans invited speakers affiliated with the military to talk about their experiences and collected money for Honor Flight, an organization that raises funds to fly veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials. Smith said StuCo drew some inspiration from this for Cards for Veterans.
“We thought of the idea after the Thanksgiving assembly with the motivational speeches from veterans,” Smith said. “We heard how impactful little things like letters can be to veterans, so we [made] them out of respect for those protecting our country.”
