StuCo makes changes in election process

After several meetings to discuss changes in how the student council (StuCo) will be run, StuCo officers finally received word of admin’s approval on Dec. 9. Their plans include improvements in the election process and officer roles that were made in response to longtime issues within StuCo’s format.

Martha Nishimwe and her twin sister, senior Gloria Nishimwe, had turned in the long and tiring QuestBridge National College Match scholarship application two months ago, hoping to receive the nonprofit’s award of full four-year scholarships and early admission to one of its college partners. They already knew they were finalists in late October, but now they had to find out if QuestBridge indeed matched them to a college and granted them the scholarship.

Thanksgiving without the turkey

When most everyone thinks of Thanksgiving food, they picture a shiny, glazed turkey, creamy mashed potatoes and some sort of casserole. This is what I imagine, though it’s been years since my family has carved a turkey, and I’ve eaten mashed potatoes maybe twice in my life.

Spotify playlists foster personal expression

On the playlist tab of a Spotify profile, one can see a person’s playlists layed out in tiles, each displaying the title and a cover picture which can be changed. Users such as senior Ellie Barnett can upload personal or other images for their covers and fully customize their profile.

Sexualized media representation damages young girls’ development, health

An overwhelming percentage of media that minors see presents sexualized characters, especially girls, even in content specifically targeted toward children. Visual media sends ideas to girls from a young age, and as they get older, this constant exposure to the objectification of female bodies can cause girls to internalize the sexualizing messages in the cultural environment they exist in, impacting them during identity formation.

National Honor Society announces student officers

After two days of members voting via a Google Form, National Honor Society (NHS) sponsor Stephanie Harman released the results of this year's NHS officer elections Oct. 30. Harman assigned two people to each position instead of the usual one person in previous years.

Telemedicine provides virtual tool for health care

During the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving one's home to receive health care can be unsafe. Because of this, health care professionals have utilized telemedicine to hold remote appointments and monitor patients.

Girls’ tennis team wins district match, celebrates senior sendoff

The RBHS girls’ tennis team won their 22nd consecutive district dual against Jefferson City High School (JCHS) Thursday evening and celebrated senior night together afterwards. This victory marked their last hurdle to reaching the sectionals dual.

CPS Nutrition Services and Custodial Departments adapt to virtual learning circumstances

Columbia Public Schools (CPS) students haven’t been in their school buildings for in-person learning since March 17 after the district-wide shutdown because of COVID-19 social distancing recommendations. CPS Custodial and Nutrition Services employees, however, have continued working for the district, though their jobs may look different from the usual. Neither department experienced layoffs.
