Once every year on Nov. 11, the United States of America takes a day to honor the soldiers who fought in wars around the world. The Vietnam War, the longest war the United States participated in throughout the last century, was a highly controversial one. Garfield Ladd, a patient at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital, joined the army in the summer of 1967 and was overseas for a little more than a year. He shares his story and experience of war.

There is no way for us to entirely honor them, for us to do that would mean to experience all of they have if we were to empathize with them. Don’t get me wrong, the actions we take to honor of them are great and surely impact them. I just feel we can’t thank them enough, as while we can offer all that we can, we don’t understand what it’s like to have friends die right next to you, kill and witness other horrors of war, and I hope there comes a day where no one has to.
