Second phase of brown-headed nuthatch reintroduction to the Missouri Ozarks begins

In total, 56 Brown-headed Nuthatches were translocated to Missouri’s Mark Twain National Forest from the Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas between August and September of this year as part of the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) effort to reintroduce the bird species to the state, Sarah Kendrick, state ornithologist with the MDC, said. The reintroduction plan commenced in 2020, bringing 102 of the once extirpated birds to Missouri throughout the last two years.

RBHS announces CFAE nominees

The Columbia Fund for Academic Excellence (CFAE) committee provides cash awards each year for educators in the Columbia Public Schools district who fall under the various categories for selection. This year, the RBHS committee nominated Dr. Andrew Kinslow for Outstanding High School Educator, Tammy Adkins for Outstanding Educator in a Specialized Area and Therasia Brautigam for Outstanding First Year Educator.

RBHS’s principal and the assistant principals are being firmer about not allowing teachers to release students before the bell. In past years, some staff members, as well as the high schoolers themselves, with permission from their teacher, could slide out of the classroom minutes before the final bell without repercussions. Now, however, this leniency is not quite as accepted. 

RBHS to include compost bins in waste removal system

By the end of September, RBHS, along with Hickman High School and Battle High School, will add compost bins to their trash disposal systems. Partnering with the City of Columbia and the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District (MMSWMD), Columbia Public Schools’ (CPS) high schools will label bins separating compost from recycling and trash.
