Affirmative action is intended to level the playing field and give equal access to historically disadvantaged minorities (on the basis of race, sex, disability, etc.) in education and in the workforce. Some say it violates the Equal Protection clause of the 14th amendment.
While opponents of affirmative action say it decreases equity because of higher standards put on some racial groups, it is imperative that colleges consider race in their admissions to ensure diversity.
