After competing at the regional tournament in February, 15 students gave up their Saturday to compete at the state-level Science Olympiad tournament. Held at Mizzou Arena, team members demonstrated their knowledge in a variety of scientific areas in events which ranged from test-taking, to building, to problem-solving. Events were broken down into several categories, such as “Dynamic Planet,” “Disease Detectives,” “Towers,” and “Technical Problem Solving.”

Out of the 15 contestants from RBHS, junior Charles Shang was the only one to medal, with a third place award in “Towers.”
This year, senior Methma Udawatta competed in “Astronomy,” “Forensics” and “Write It, Do It.” Although it takes a lot of effort to get to the state level and perform well, Udawatta believes the time spent is well worth it.
“It seems like just work, but it’s actually a lot of fun,” Udawatta said. “You get to learn about things you wouldn’t ordinarily learn in school or science classes.”
