The Bruins shutout Smith-Cotton High School (SCHS), Friday, Sept. 1, with a final score of 66-0 in the second home game of the season.
After a tough loss to Park Hill South (PHS), Friday, Aug. 25, RBHS was raring to go from the opening kickoff, launched by senior kicker Joey Scardina. A quick first down, followed by a three and out and a tipped punt gave the Bruins their first possession of the night. That possession ended in a touchdown by junior wide receiver Drevyn Seamon who totaled three touchdowns during the night.
The Bruins have opened the season by giving both senior quarterback Sam Kaiser and junior quarterback Brady Davidson significant play time. Senior running back Cooper Myers said both quarterbacks are very talented and that the Bruins “need to have them both on the field.” Regardless of Friday’s success, Myers said that there are always things to improve on.
“I feel like it’s important to stay focused,” Myers said. “Even though we know [SCHS] is a bad team, we need to stay focused and keep doing what we’re doing.”
From the initial touchdown, the tone of the game was set, and the Bruins started to roll. An interception with 7:34 left in the first quarter was stopped on the goal line by the Tigers, who forced a turnover on downs, but the resulting possession ended in a safety and eventual touchdown for Seamon. One blocked punt and a couple possessions later, the first quarter ended with the Bruins ahead 25-0.
The second quarter saw many of the same victories for the Bruins, and an interception by senior safety Cullen Snow allowed Kaiser to connect with junior wide receiver Devin Holt on a touchdown pass, giving RBHS a 46-0 lead at the half. While the defense played well against PHS the week before, defensive coordinator Ethan Smith said the defense still had room to grow because of a lack of turnovers. Against SCHS, the Bruins showcased their practice with multiple interceptions and a pair of safeties.
“We do different circuits every week,” Smith said. “We have blitz circuits where we’re focusing on how we want to blitz and how we’re going to get the ball in that regard. We also have takeaway circuits where we’re working on tip balls and ripping the ball out, and we’re working on punching the ball out every day in practice.”
Coming out of the half, RBHS started with the ball and ended the drive with yet another touchdown pass to Seamon as the shutout continued. A 53-0 score marked the end of the third quarter, and another Bruin defensive stand. Senior linebacker Grayson Cutchlow played a key role in the defense, plugging holes in the defensive line and chipping in as an edge rusher on occasion.
“I think we were very dominant on both sides of the ball,” Cutchlow said. “The game plan was to pressure the quarterback while not allowing him to get outside the pocket, and defensively, everyone is a playmaker.”
Closing out the fourth quarter, Davidson connected with junior receiver Riley Rolwing for a touchdown, and junior cornerback Donovan Taylor finished the game with a pick-six, putting the final score at 66-0.
“We knew they were a power run team,” Smith said. “So we decided we were going to be more physical than them and take that away. That’s kind of just our motto and mindset. Any situation we’re in, our default is aggressive. If we’re ever not sure of what to do, we’re going to be physical and aggressive.”
