What do you think is one of the biggest flaws in the American education system?
“A big flaw in the American education system is that wealthier students have an unfair advantage to students in a lower income family. A lot of aspects of education are monetized — like College Board, a so-called nonprofit business — but they charge you so much for AP tests and textbooks. They only call themselves a nonprofit so they don’t have to pay taxes, which is pretty screwed up if you ask me. Also, ACT classes cost a lot, and now they have ACT watches, which are being monetized by the ACT corporation and College Board for like $40 bucks for a trashy watch. The education system is pretty f***** up because if you grow up in a family with a lower income, your education is probably gonna suck.”
What steps could the government and educators take to combat the issues you have outlined?
“Demonetizing the education system could eliminate the unfair advantage of wealth. Students in lower income situations have lower grades, and their learning experiences aren’t as great because they have to spend a lot of their time working in high school to earn more money. [While] kids like me who are better off and don’t have to work jobs, so that makes it easier for me to do better in school. Overall, I just think we need to demonetize the school system and give everyone a fair chance. We should offer free ACT and SAT tutoring resources.”
