Anime Club, founded by senior Ron Jefferson this year, will host a screening of “Patema Inverted” tomorrow, Dec. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. in room 206-7. Tickets to the show cost $5, and the experience comes with food and drinks, Jefferson said. While there are only around 10 official members of the club, he said the screening could accommodate over 50 people.
‘Patema Inverted’ tells a story of failed science experiment that reverses gravity for nearly everyone on the planet except for Eiji who teams up with Patema to save the planet.
Counselor Douglas Stansberry bought four tickets to distribute to students around the school who might be discouraged to attend by the fee. He said he gave them to Jefferson to determine who would get them.
“It sounded like a cool opportunity,” Stansberry said. “It seemed like a good option to make it affordable, and in the spirit of the holidays [do something] generous.”
Anime Club meets once a week to watch anime, a japanese style of cartoon, and read manga. Jefferson said if anyone wants to join the club, they should email him at [email protected]. The club has already seen “My Hero Academia” and “Tokyo Ghoul,” and Jefferson said the profit of the screening will go to buying more manga and paying for other club expenses.
Although an anime watcher in his spare time, sophomore Shadid Shakhawat doesn’t plan on joining the club. He said his favorite show is “Dragon Ball Z” because “the story is amazing, and you can relate to the characters in a sense.”
“I was actually born in Japan, so I got into anime,” Shakhawat said. “I like the story and plot and everything about it.”
While Shakhaawat said he likes anime, he said he wouldn’t attend the screening because he prefers watching it alone. Jefferson, however, encouraged more to come to build community and talk about the different shows they enjoy.
“I’ve been into it my whole life, since I could talk and walk [in elementary school],” Jefferson said. “I found it myself.”
