The main commons will be full of warm Thanksgiving spirit during the evening of Nov. 21 and 22.
For the first time in RBHS’ history, Healthcare Hopes, a branch of Rock Bridge Reaches Out (RBRO) will hold a Thanksgiving gram sale. The members will sell handmade Thanksgiving cards along with an option of homemade desserts at the price of $2, and they will donate the profit made to the patients of the University of Missouri Health Care (MU Health Care).
Healthcare Hopes is a club with members that volunteer, fundraise and donate to hospitals so that patients who are in need can receive the care that is necessary. This semester the club will collect money through a sale of baked goods and cards.
Junior Genney Zheng is the president of Healthcare Hopes. Earlier this semester, Zheng had a conversation with Kay Wright, the MU Health Care volunteer specialist within high school and college students.
During the conversation she became aware that numerous patients of the MU Health Care had a lack of resources
After thorough discussion between Zheng and the members of Healthcare Hopes, they decide on a thanksgiving gram, and that they would donate the profit made during the fundraiser.
Fatimah Yousuf is a freshman who will participate in the fundraiser. She made cards and posters with her peers. They will place posters in the halls of RBHS to promote the fundraiser, and the cards will be sold with the homemade goods.
“I think it is for a really good cause,” Yousuf said. “And we did as much as we could to promote the fundraiser.”
The cards were handmade with humorous messages on them, such as: “I’m thankful for you” and “I’ve only got eyes for you.” The cards also have a blank area for the consumer to write a personal message to the receiver.
The members of HH will bake cookies, brownies and cupcakes at Zheng’s house Wednesday, Nov. 20 to prepare for the after school sale that will take place the subsequent day.
“It is meaningful when we make the treats by ourselves,” Zheng said. “We put the effort into the work and we try our best.”
David Egan, the athletic and activities director of RBHS gave Zheng confirmation over the fundraiser but told her that the goods would have to be sold after school hours were over because they did not meet the guidelines of Missouri’s school nutrition laws.
To follow the rules, the baked goods will be kept in Zheng’s house. The sale will last from 4:05-4:45p.m. on both Nov. 21 and 22nd.
Zheng provides the equipment and payments for the club, and she helps to organize and run the club. Zheng wishes to help her peers and patients who are in need in any possible way she is capable of.
“I am happy to work with Genney,” Yousuf said. “She is always kind and caring.”
Zheng is kind hearted towards not only the patients, but also to peers around her.
“I would be happy if at least one patient was helped,” Zheng said.
