What do you think is one of the biggest flaws in the American education system?
“I’ve noticed that the diversity in education across the nation is different and I know it’s affected a lot of my family members. Some of my family lives in Iowa and they have a completely different [education] system than we do here. It’s not necessarily [a] horrible [problem,] but it does differ in how much [their school] cares about and/or uses what they have to teach things in a different way. I would say this [issue] hasn’t done anything horrible for me, but I have seen it affect some friends of mine who have trouble with the different ways [schools] give breaks. They’ve been at other schools [where] they’re just expected to focus a lot, so that’s kinda affected their grades. I would say that this has impacted students through their education and their social lives. There are so many students that are so dedicated to their work that they don’t really have time to interact with others, depending on how much work is put onto them. So then they lose connections with people and they become so absorbed in [their] work that when they don’t have work, they don’t really know what to do with themselves.”
What steps could the government and educators take to combat the issues you have outlined?
“I think [the American education system] should come to a compromise for allowing different options for different students because everyone learns differently and everyone adapts to different situations in different ways. So, if [schools] offered multiple different [options] it might help students pick and choose what works best for them rather than [students thinking] ‘Oh, I have to do things this way because it’s the only option’. I would say all states and all school districts should have the same options for their students because this is an issue with a lot of schools. I think we could fix it all together by holding schools across the nation to the same standards of offering different learning styles.”
