What do you think is one of the biggest flaws in the American education system?
“I think that a big flaw in the American education system is that we get so much homework, and it’s hard to balance our homework in all of our classes, especially with projects and heavily graded assignments. Our teachers often assign them to us at about the same time, and typically deadlines are all the same, too, so it becomes difficult to manage, prioritize, and organize. Also, tests are a struggle. Oftentimes tests are given on the same day, and it feels like teachers don’t necessarily recognize how much stress that puts on the students. Multiple tests and project deadlines occurring simultaneously is a very stressful thing for students to have to deal with. I recommend that a testing schedule be put in place and that teachers try to communicate with others outside of their department in order to attempt to avoid stacking all the tests on the same day. Or maybe they could have a group calendar set up where they write down their test dates so teachers can work around each other to relieve a bit of stress which may in turn benefit the students’ outcome on tests. Last year in one of my classes we had two essays, one unit test and the final, all due in the same week. That was just for one class, so imagine having to manage that on top of all of your other classes. It’s a lot.”
