As students return in January, they will only have eight days to switch classes. Jan. 12 is the final date students can switch classes for second semester. Even though switching classes at this time is probable, there are other challenges students may face.
“We work through issues with the student and parent; however, we are firm on the deadlines,” Betsy Jones said. “As far as switching classes, there is very little room in classes so a change may not be possible.”
With the quickly approaching deadline after winter break, along with the prospects of actually being able to switch classes, students might not hit the deadline or not be able to make their wanted class. If someone is faced with this situation, they have to choose to stay or to leave their existing class.
“There are a lot of students that aren’t aware of the deadline and think they can add a class late in the semester,” Gretchen Cleppe said. “Ultimately we just say no. We can’t add a class. We can drop a class until the first IPR for a study hall, but that could possibly cause a problem if you need MSHSAA.”
MSHSAA is the Missouri State High School Activities Association. They are the governing body for high school activities. One of their rules is that students participating in activities such as sports, band, debate, choir, etc. have to have a full schedule. Students who miss the deadline can only drop a class, so they have to stick with their previous classes to stay MSHSAA eligible.
However, if students do change classes in time, it is a very smooth process. Alexis Walker changed from an honors class to a non-honors class and avoided any problems.
“No I didn’t have any problems. The counseling room was very helpful. They just told me to do this and this and this and I was done,” Alexis Walker said.
Accessing counselors is important to be able to switch classes, so students should note starting Jan. 4 counselors will be available during regular school hours, Cleppe said.
