While the Bruins kept a steady lead during most of the away game against St. Joseph Lafayette on Saturday, December 9, it was their skill in the second half that especially stood out. The team was able to create a big run late and cement the win with a ten point run, finishing with a score of 47-37. This pattern mirrors their win over Francis Howell last week, in which they also improved in the last two quarters.
Senior point guard Addie Logsdon believes her teammates’ focus on defending against the Fighting Irish is what secured them a victory.
“We really utilized our guard-oriented team and were able to switch on defense. This week we put in new defenses at practice, [and] so we used those,” Logsdon said. “We knew it was gonna be a game where we needed to contain the guards, but still had to get up because they could shoot.”
This will be their fourth win in a row, bringing their record to 4-1. Currently, the Bruins average 10.75 points over their opponents, a number which matches closely to their score today. Coach Jill Nagel considers the game to be a success, not only because of the improving stats, but also due to the player’s ability to step up to challenge.
“We made adjustments throughout the game and I am very pleased with the result of the players executing those adjustments,” Nagel said. “We need to do a better job of hitting our free throws but overall we took good care of the ball fourth quarter.”
Junior forward Maddie Collier thinks positively of the RBHS win, but she is looking forward to improving on her own personal goals.
“I think we did really well on our 2-3 zone defense and make adjustments when we needed to,” Collier said. “What I will be working on is my offensive efficiency and getting to the boards. Come out to our home game opener December 20 against Battle.”
The top two scorers were senior guards Payton McAllister and Katey Klucking with 19 and 14 respectively. While their efforts were impressive, Logsdon still remembers a score by junior forward Mary Capron as a sign of the team’s clutch play that she hopes with carry through the rest of the season.
“The greatest moment was when Mary Capron got a rebound and putback at the buzzer going into the fourth quarter,” Logsdon said. “It was a good win against a good team at their place.”
