[dropcap size=”4″]R[/dropcap]ebound after rebound, the RBHS girls’ basketball team dominated against crosstown rival Hickman High School (HHS). Clinching a 53-48 victory, the Bruins overcame playing in a hostile environment and used electricity from both sides to win the game.
‘We played awesome,” senior forward Madison Treece said. “We followed our game plan and played exactly how we wanted to. It was awesome to play under the intensity. Whether it was the Hickman section or the Rock Bridge section, we just fed off it and used it to win.”
Being one of three Bruins to score in the double digits, Treece explains that to prepare for the intense cheering, the girls practiced with heavy metal music to get ready.
“At practice we listened to a lot of heavy metal music, a lot of opera music to get ready, but when it comes down to it you just have to stay focused,” junior guard Katey Klucking said. “But playing with a crowd that intense is just a lot of fun.“
As for the rivalry victory, the Lady Bruins were more than content with the final score.
“Hickman’s a really talented team,” head coach Jill Nagel said. “We knew we’d have our hands full defensively so we really worked on our box outs and rebounds.”
Klucking, under the loud and energetic crowd, found solace in what they practiced and felt confident from the get-go that the Lady Bruins had what it takes to take home the victory.
“Even the first quarter started well,” junior Katey Klucking said. “We had a lot of transitional layups, Elle to Payton, creating a lot of opportunities. We also boxed out really well throughout the game and did well on that. On top of that we guarded their two best players and kept them below their average, and I’m really happy about that.”
Nagel, content with the night’s performance, expressed her appreciation for the team and their victory in such an important game.
“I’m happy for the kids,” Nagel said. “It was a rivalry game that they really wanted to win, and seeing them out there having fun was great. That’s what it’s all about for me.
