ROY G BIV, a core of Rock Bridge Reaches Out, hosted a babysitting fundraiser from 6- 8:30 p.m. yesterday at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. Club members raised $120, which will be used to provide meals and pillowcases for children at the Rainbow House.
Club co-leader and senior Erica Garrison helped advertise the event by placing posters in the teachers’ lounge and telling family friends that she used to babysit for. Additionally, club members made a list of games to play, including tag, charades and twister, as well as printing out coloring book pages.
Although a lot of work went into preparing for the fundraiser, Garrison feels the cause was well worth it.
“This fundraiser was important because for our club to help the Rainbow House we had to spend money,” Garrison said. “We can’t go and volunteer because we have to be out of high school, so things we can do is make meals for [the children], have supply drives for them and donate stuff, which takes money.”
This wasn’t the first time ROY G BIV organized this particular fundraiser. Garrison said they tried to do it last year, but no children came because of bad timing. Senior Divya Divya said this year, however, the event was a success.
“I think the fundraiser went really well. We had a lot of babysitters come, and I think around five kids,” Divya said. “It was great fun to just kind of play around with them and run.”
Junior Alexis Garrison also attended the event and agrees with Divya. She hopes they’ll be able to plan the event again for February or March.
“We had a lot of club members show up which made for some great kickball,” Alexis Garrison said. “With such a small number of children they were able to pick what they wanted to do and have their own club member to play with.”
