When the RBHS boys soccer team stepped onto the field a little after 7 p.m, pleasant warm air greeted them, setting the stage for the perfect victory with perfect weather. Going up against the Whitfield Warriors, the Bruin boys took home a 2-0 win in their last game of the season.
From the start, getting a win tonight, Oct. 24, was important to the team, not only for the glory that comes with any success, but for the significance it would hold for seniors.
“The biggest thing was that we all knew that it could be the last time the seniors ever played at home,” said team captain and defender senior Jordan Reiske. “We really wanted to get the win and it def[initely] showed. The stat sheet was crazy with the number of shots we had.”
The Bruin boys went all out, but their labor bore no fruit as the first half ended: the score was tied 0-0. The Bruins didn’t worry yet though, as they knew they had been playing well and all they needed was the finishing power.
The chances that put the Bruins ahead didn’t come until 25 minutes into the second half. Freshman striker and wing midfielder Tarnue Tyler managed to put in a goal for the home team, giving the RBHS boys a 1-0 lead. The team wasn’t done, however. Less than ten minutes later, senior striker and wing midfielder Ryan Stanowski scored another one for RBHS; now pulling ahead 2-0, the Bruin boys clinched the win.
“The intensity was great. Everyone was demanding the ball and we were creating a ton of opportunities ,” Reiske said. “We really didn’t have too many weaknesses. We did struggle on finishing, but we ended up putting away the chances we needed to win.”
