Research shows sleeping with makeup on has damaging effects on skin
Most people wear makeup to conceal their flaws, but keeping it on for too long can lead to more blemishes than you started out with. Healthy collagen in the skin breaks down when exposed to pollution in the environment that makeup hangs on to. When that collagen fully erodes, the skin is left with fine lines and wrinkles.
Fortunately for sophomore Kathleen John, falling asleep with makeup on is a rare occurrence.
“The only time I’ve ever slept with makeup is when I come home late and I’m just too tired to remove it,” John said. “Otherwise, I use a makeup remover wipe to take the chemicals off my face so I don’t break out.”
Along with breakouts, premature aging also occurs because face makeup, such as foundations, powders and concealers, doesn’t allow the skin to breath and recover from accumulated stress. Sleeping in mascara and other eye products won’t cause acne or fine lines, but can lead to irritation of the eyes and clogged oil glands or hair follicles called styes.
“I got eyeliner in my eye,” senior Bree Davis said when talking about her experience. “My pillow was permanently smeared with eyeliner.”
Sleeping in any type of cosmetic products will eventually lead to damage, but oil-based foundations and primers are the biggest culprits. Not only do they prevent the skin from repairing itself, but they cause breakouts and blackheads to surface as well. Body temperature rises as you sleep, making it easier for makeup to leak into your pores.
“I have felt the effects of sleeping with makeup on,” said junior Cailyin Buck. “I didn’t get acne, I just felt gross.”
Freshman Carmen Ramirez had a similar experience. Her skin broke out a bit in the morning, but nothing too bad.
The solution to eventual skin damage caused by sleeping in makeup is obvious and simple: wash your face, or at least keep wet wipes near your bed. One slip-up won’t do any harm, but the worsening condition of your skin after multiple offenses will have you wishing you had reached for the face cleanser instead of the power.[TS-VCSC-Content-Flip flip_style=”style1″ flip_effect_style1=”horizontal” flip_effect_style2=”ts-flip-right” flip_effect_speed=”medium” flip_size_auto=”true” flip_size=”200″ front_html=”false” back_html=”false” read_more_link=”false” read_more_txt=”Read More” read_more_target=”_parent” front_icon_replace=”true” front_image=”270815″ front_image_full=”true” front_icon_size=”412″ flip_border_thick=”1″ flip_border_radius=”ts-radius-small” front_icon_frame_thick=”1″ front_icon_frame_radius=”ts-radius-small” front_padding=”false” front_icon_padding=”0″ front_icon_color=”#cccccc” front_icon_frame_color=”#000000″ front_color=”#000000″ front_color_title=”#000000″ front_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_front=”#0c0c0c” back_color=”#000000″ back_color_title=”#000000″ back_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_back=”#111111″ read_more_color=”#000000″ read_more_background=”#dddddd” animations=”false” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”0″ back_content=”“I have felt the effects of sleeping with makeup on,” said junior Kaitlyn Buck. “I didn’t get acne, I just felt gross.“”][TS-VCSC-Content-Flip flip_style=”style1″ flip_effect_style1=”horizontal” flip_effect_style2=”ts-flip-right” flip_effect_speed=”medium” flip_size_auto=”true” flip_size=”200″ front_html=”false” back_html=”false” back_content=”“I got eyeliner in my eye,” senior Bree Davis said when talking about her experience. “My pillow was permanently smeared with eyeliner.”” read_more_link=”false” read_more_txt=”Read More” read_more_target=”_parent” front_icon_replace=”true” front_image=”270832″ front_image_full=”true” front_icon_size=”512″ flip_border_thick=”1″ flip_border_radius=”ts-radius-small” front_icon_frame_thick=”1″ front_icon_frame_radius=”ts-radius-small” front_padding=”false” front_icon_padding=”0″ front_icon_color=”#cccccc” front_icon_frame_color=”#000000″ front_color=”#000000″ front_color_title=”#000000″ front_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_front=”#000000″ back_color=”#000000″ back_color_title=”#000000″ back_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_back=”#000000″ read_more_color=”#000000″ read_more_background=”#dddddd” animations=”false” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”0″][TS-VCSC-Content-Flip flip_style=”style1″ flip_effect_style1=”horizontal” flip_effect_style2=”ts-flip-right” flip_effect_speed=”medium” flip_size_auto=”true” flip_size=”200″ front_html=”false” back_html=”false” back_content=”“I don’t have very sensitive skin,“ freshman Carmen Ramirez said, “but when I do wear makeup at night, my skin gets a lot worse.“” read_more_link=”false” read_more_txt=”Read More” read_more_target=”_parent” front_icon_replace=”true” front_image=”270842″ front_image_full=”true” front_icon_size=”72″ flip_border_thick=”1″ flip_border_radius=”ts-radius-small” front_icon_frame_thick=”1″ front_icon_frame_radius=”ts-radius-small” front_padding=”false” front_icon_padding=”0″ front_icon_color=”#cccccc” front_icon_frame_color=”#000000″ front_color=”#000000″ front_color_title=”#000000″ front_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_front=”#000000″ back_color=”#000000″ back_color_title=”#000000″ back_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_back=”#000000″ read_more_color=”#000000″ read_more_background=”#dddddd” animations=”false” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”0″][TS-VCSC-Content-Flip flip_style=”style1″ flip_effect_style1=”horizontal” flip_effect_style2=”ts-flip-right” flip_effect_speed=”medium” flip_size_auto=”true” flip_size=”200″ front_html=”false” back_html=”false” back_content=”“The only time I’ve ever slept with makeup is when I come home late and I’m just too tired to remove it,” sophomore Kathleen John said. “Otherwise, I use a makeup remover wipe to take the chemicals off my face so I don’t break out.“” read_more_link=”false” read_more_txt=”Read More” read_more_target=”_parent” front_icon_replace=”true” front_image=”270848″ front_image_full=”true” front_icon_size=”70″ flip_border_thick=”1″ front_icon_frame_thick=”1″ front_padding=”false” front_icon_padding=”0″ front_icon_color=”#cccccc” front_icon_frame_color=”#000000″ front_color=”#000000″ front_color_title=”#000000″ front_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_front=”#dddddd” back_color=”#000000″ back_color_title=”#000000″ back_background=”#ffffff” flip_border_color_back=”#dddddd” read_more_color=”#000000″ read_more_background=”#dddddd” animations=”false” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”0″]By Kat Sarafianos and Nikol Slatinska
