While their classmates enjoyed the end of another long school week, the Bruin girls swimming and diving team competed at the Cape Girardeau Invitational Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25, bringing home an overall third place finish for the relays.
Many of the girls were acknowledged for their excellent performance at the meet. Sophomores Lexi Peery, Anna Willcoxon, Kelley Tackett and junior Althea Felton won second place for the 200 medley. Senior Kyra Florea, Tackett, Peery and Felton snagged first place for the 200 freestyle, and senior Sammy See, Florea and Willcoxon won fourth for their 400 freestyle.
While Peery participated in all the relay races that placed at the meet, she fell just short of the state cut in the individual 500 freestyle race. She said several of her teammates did make the cut, and she herself was very close.
“I was very close to state cut in the 500 free. The cut is 5:29:39, and I got a 5:29:60, so I had a good meet,” Peery said. “I did good on my relays, so overall [it was] a good meet.”
Peery said the team’s performance was much better than some of their previous meets and noticed the atmosphere was much more enthusiastic than ever before. Reflecting on the team’s performance in Cape Girardeau, Peery said she believes they are ready for the state meet, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22.
“I thought this meet was better than other meets because there was more excitement throughout the team, more than there has been at other meets, which helped other people get more excited to swim,” Peery said. “I think the team has improved a lot over the season. Many people have improved. I think that I’m ready for State more than I could be.”
