Yesterday, on a night when she was honored for scoring her thousandth point as a RBHS Bruin, junior Sophie Cunningham and her teammates handily beat in-state foe Ozark (8-6) 62-32 to move to 10-2 on the year.
Cunningham finished the night with 23 points for the bruins who extended their win streak to 11 straight games.
“I think it was just my drive,” Cunningham said of her offensive explosion. “But I couldn’t do it without my teammates; they did a great job tonight trying to get me the ball, and we just threw the ball around tonight.”
The Bruins were down a couple points early in the game but aided by a 10-0 second-quarter run, RBHS was able to take a 33-16 lead into the break.
The Tigers did not come out and lay down in the second half and were able to cut the lead to 43-26 going into the final quarter.
“I think we were doing fine, we just weren’t getting some of the openings that we normally get,” RBHS head coach Jill Nagel said. “Credit Ozark for that, but the kids stayed patient. They continued to work the offense and made things happen.”
The Bruins were able to come back when sophomore Brianna Ellis started the scoring in the fourth quarter with an impressive steal and fastbreak layup. This sparked the Bruins again who played a sound defense — allowing only 6 points over the last 8 minutes of play. The Bruins also came up with several steals in the final period.
Seniors Audrey Holt and Chayla Cheadle also scored in double figures for the Bruins, with Holt adding several rebounds as well.
