As a way to inform parents about under-age drinking and illegal drug usage, Jeremy Duke, a licensed professional counselor in Columbia, held a presentation about teen drug and alcohol use for RBHS parents and students on Thursday, Nov. 7. Duke believes parent resource meetings are a great way to discuss major issues like this.
“I’ve done several parent resource nights over the years,” Duke said. “I think this is the third or fourth presentation I’ve done at RBHS.”
The guidance staff and PTSA have sponsored these parent resource meetings for several years now. Kelly Anderson, outreach counselor at RBHS, said the meeting this ignited a great conversation that allowed many people to express their thoughts.
“The purpose of this meeting is to give our parents some knowledge and information about issues regarding teen drug and alcohol use,” Anderson said.
Sharmila Suri, mother of freshman Keerthi Premkumar, said the presentation by Duke opened her eyes. Suri said the presentation helped her learn new things she never knew of before.
“I think Rock Bridge does a great thing by holding these meetings because its almost a gathering where parents get the opportunity to gain knowledge,” Suri said. “This one about drug usage and alcohol consumption by teens had a vast amount of information. The presentation by Duke was also fantastic.”

I think it’s important for parents to know all the harmful things out there that their child could potentially consume, and I think this meeting does a great job of that.

I hope that meetings such as this one open up discourse on the serious issue of teens and dangerous substances. I think students should also be involved in future discussions.

Today I feel a lot of parents are left in the dark about what their teen might be up to. It’s great that there are presentations like this to keep parents informed, and ultimately keeps teens safe.

This is so great that RBHS holds meetings like this. Did more parents show up to this meeting than they have at the ones RBHS has held in the past?
