The only regular season matchup between RBHS and Hickman started with the the Bruins winning the first two points of their volleyball match against their crosstown rivals at Columbia College’s Southwell Complex. The girls took control from there, scoring 25 of the 36 points and cruising to an easy 25-13 win in game one and eventually a two games to none win in the match.
Behind strong plays from senior twins Kayla and Chayla Cheadle at the net as well as a pair of juniors Bailey Lawson and Carly Offerdahl, the Lady Bruins topped their opponents in convincing fashion. Winning game one certainly helped the bruins confidence.
“It just gave us the upper hand,” senior setter Annah Webber said of game one. “We knew we were going to have to fight harder the second game because Hickman wanted it just as bad as we did”
RBHS opened up a comfortable lead in game number two thanks in large part to strong serves by Offerdahl and senior Madison Boyken. Several substitutes played significant minutes for the Bruins in the second game. The Kewpies made a run to close the lead to 22-24 but RBHS was able to win the final point on a spike after a timeout to clinch the game and the match.
“It is always exciting to beat [Hickman],” junior outside hitter Bailey Lawson said, “especially at Columbia College.”
Lawson had several great digs in the back row to set up big points for the Bruins front line players such as the Cheadles and seniors Audrey Holt and Madison Boyken.
The Bruins will be in action again Monday Oct. 30 against Wentsville Holt High School in the district tournament at Hickman High School.
