Sporting bright-yellow, polka-dotted knee socks and winning attitudes, the RBHS girls golf team competed for a possible fourth consecutive district championship title earlier today, Oct. 1.
Ready to defend their title, the top five teed off at 11 a.m., finishing 18 holes and posting scores by 5:30 this evening. After tallying the marks, the Bruins once again took home the championship. Although it’s already quite an achievement for the group, sophomore Samantha Farmer views the district title as just a stepping stone to winning the state tournament.
“My mindset was that we were the best team in the state, but this was the first step to getting the championship so we couldn’t think too far ahead,” Farmer said. Coach Melissa Coil “was saying that our biggest competition was ourselves so I had to go in there with a strong mental game and just focus on each shot.”
As if bringing home another plaque wasn’t enough, the girls also set a new 18 hole record at 327 strokes with all five players placing in the top 15. Senior Makayla Baker received medalist honors with a personal best 76 to lead the team.
However, the competition isn’t over yet. Hickman placed second behind the Bruins, shooting a season best 341 and will be competing against RBHS next Monday at the sectional tournament at Tanglewood golf course to determine which team moves onto state.
As for the Bruins outlook on next week, if everyone plays a good game individually, the team could be an unstoppable force, Farmer said.
“I’m just going to practice hard and play the game like we do because when we all play our best no one can beat us and I think we have a good chance,” Farmer said. “We all know the course pretty well and are ready to win.”
