“Style and what you wear is really just how you express yourself; it’s what you’re inspired by and what you soak up,” said G-Eazy, a Californian hip-hop artist who has in recent years gotten attention for his style; a simple, minimalist look focusing on ‘50s icons like James Dean and Johnny Cash. GQ Magazine named G-Eazy one of the best dressed men at the New York Fashion week in 2014. G-Eazy is arguably one of the perfect examples of expressing oneself through style.
With approximately 2,000 students attending RBHS from different parts of Columbia, varied styles are expected. Style is, arguably, one of the most free and expansive ways to express oneself, as it’s something that someone may carefully mold and adapt around themself and slowly build-up as they age.
Sophomore Kate Ross is confident in what she wears but also believes she can do more with time. Ross follows a “basic” look and enjoys buying popular brands of clothes.
“Honestly, like all of my life I’ve changed my style, and I’m still trying to make it to what is truly me,” Ross said. “I like the fact that since they cost more, me buying them makes me feel like I have the money to buy them.”
In 2018, trends include focus on the fashion of the 1980s, “logo” apparel and belt bags. Even jeans are getting a makeover; The Huffington Post stated, “The no-stretch denim trend is in full swing, with consumers turning their eyes toward 100-percent cotton jeans and denim in 2018.”
Trends at fashion shows don’t always transfer over to high school students with factors including money, past influences and preferences. Students such as sophomore Jack Buckley don’t always follow trends.
“I try to stay away from trends because I enjoy standing out and being different,” Buckley said. “My inspiration is David Bowie and ‘80s artists like Duran Duran; I would describe it as colorful.”
With so many decades behind them, students have a wide range of inspiration at their disposal. Now in 2018, nearly everyone has access to the internet, forever expanding the inspiration for students. Regularly checking social media means seeing the constant posts of different public figures in style ranging from artists like Kanye West, G-Eazy or even YouTubers like Dre Drexler.
Ross believes in allowing students to wear what they want in order to find self-expression.
“I think that it’s important for people to express themselves because it allows people to be who they really are,” Ross said.
