On Saturday, Nov. 19, the Bruins once again snagged third place at the state championship, defeating Lee’s Summit West (24-7) 1-0.
After Friday night’s brutal game and disappointing loss to Oakville (21-8-1), RBHS could not play in the finals game for the state championship. Instead, they set their sight on the next best thing: third place and ending the season on a win.
From the very beginning, the Bruins controlled the game. They were “more technically sound than them and possessed the ball better,” senior Jonas Gassmann said. In the first half, senior Sam Stoekl scored the only goal, giving RBHS a 1-0 lead they kept the entire game. Both teams played a fair game compared to semifinal match the Bruins played the night before, where RBHS recieved two yellow cards and Oakville earned four.
Saturday’s victory was the last this soccer team would earn together. Gassmann is one of 11 seniors being graduated from the Bruins.
“It was a bittersweet game becuase it was the last game, but I’ve had so many good experiences with my awesome teammates,” Gassmann said. For next year’s team, “Just try and build on the identity of a hardworking team that plays good soccer. Fight for everything.”
DeSmet (25-4-1) took first and Oakville (21-8-1), second in state competition.
