Economics and business teacher Susan Lidholm said for her Investments 101 class she was previewing the movie “The Wizard of Lies,” a biopic about former investment advisor Bernie Madoff who is currently in jail for running a Ponzi scheme which defrauded $64.8 billion.
Around 10 RBHS classes attended a display from the Black History 101 Mobile Museum in the Performing Arts Center Lobby throughout the school day March 3. The exhibit, entitled “The Five Elements of Hip Hop,” included 150 artifacts from time periods ranging from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to modern rap and hip hop. CEO and curator Dr. Khalid el-Hakim, who started as an educator in Detroit and has personally acquired thousands of items that make up the collection founded the museum.
Teresa Brooks, who works at the University of Missouri hospital system in patient access and revenue, was the first female student body president at RBHS.
Housing has been the most egregious instance of discrimination in America's economy, with a 32.5% gap in homeownership between black and white Americans. This in turn drives a massive racial wealth gap because of the economic importance of owning a home. Therefore, housing reparations are needed to increase black homeownership and counteract existing biases.
RBHS Science Olympiad competed at the Regional Competition Feb. 22 at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo. To accomodate a large number of competitors, RBHS sent both a green and a gold team. The gold team earned second place overall, and the green team took sixth. Qualifying students, selected by chemistry teacher and club sponsor Stephanie Harman based on Regional performance, will now begin preparing for the State Competition on April 4, which will take place at Westminster University in Fulton, Mo.
Although the aim to stop global terrorism must inarguably be a goal of the U.S., the War on Terror and U.S. engagement in the Middle East will only serve to do the exact opposite by fueling anti-American sentiment.
Although the goal of sanctions is to remove Maduro from office for his human rights abuses, they tragically only increase the suffering of the Venezuelan people. It is time for the U.S. to learn from its history of misguided intervention in Latin America and recognize we are worsening the problems we aim to solve.
Deadlines control students’ lives. The specter of late work deductions or even worse, a zero, force students to figure out a way to manage their time that often result in stressful, unhealthy work management. The RBHS Executive Council and faculty are right to support separating academic performance from work ethic and behavior, moving away from harsh late work penalties.
