August 2013 may seem far in the future, but the date stirs much excitement for students after crews broke ground for the opening of new gymnasium facilities. Gymnasiums are being constructed at both Hickman and Rock Bridge High Schools and will open around the same time as the new Battle High School.
For Bruins an auxiliary gym will be built near the south lot to accommodate for the academic and athletic needs that come with facilitating the upcoming freshman class of 2014. Editions to this gym include a wrestling room, new locker rooms and a basement area for classrooms and other curricular purposes.
It won’t replace the current competition usage of the main gym however, as it will be used as a practice gym seating only 500 or so fans, athletic director Jen Mast said. This will allow after school activities to commence with ease because two gyms will be open.
The current wrestling room, which will be moved to the practice gym basement, will be vacant, providing RBHS with extra space for curricular activities, classroom areas, or a downstairs common, which has yet to be determined.
At Hickman High School the school’s main gym will be demolished and a new competition gym containing a grandstand (home bleachers) and classroom space that could potentially consist of career center classrooms including Culinary Arts and wood shop, Mast said.
This project for both RBHS and HHS will cost approximately 12.6 million dollars, which voters approved in a bond issue and will provide the schools with much needed resources.
